It might take longer than usual to process applications because of coronavirus (COVID-19) but this will not affect the decision. Extra time will be allowed to enrol biometrics, provide additional information, and arrange a citizenship ceremony. Do not apply by post if you’ll need your documents back by a specific date.
The British Nationality Act 1981 is a law that defines who is a British citizen. In order to apply for British citizenship, you need to meet the following requirements:
-You must have lived in the UK for five years or more
-You must be of good character and not be engaged in any criminal activity
-You must speak English and pass an English language test
-You must have sufficient funds to support yourself without needing benefits from the public purse.
The most common ways to apply for citizenship are by descent, marriage, or registration. If you are an overseas worker who has been living in Britain for more than three years, you can register as a citizen of the UK by making an application to the Home Office. If you have been married to a British citizen for more than three years, you can also apply for citizenship through this route.
The first step would be to make sure that you have all the required documents. You need your passport, birth certificate and your parents’ birth certificates, marriage, or civil partnership certificates if applicable and any previous passports that you have had. You also need to provide proof of your address in the UK and evidence of any time spent living in another country before coming to the UK.
If you are married or in a civil partnership, then you will need to provide evidence that both parties are legally able to marry or enter into a civil partnership with each other and this will include providing copies of their original marriage or civil partnership certificate(s)
